Writing Poetry Using Symbolism and Imagery
- Choose from one of the three pictures to use as a topic
for a short poem to be written during the procedure.
- Students will have 3-5 minutes to brainstorm ideas.
- Students will use
Poetry
Writing Engine to write a draft of their poem.
Instructional Objectives:
SWBAT
- Work within a peer editing group.
- Write poetry using imagery.
- Write poetry using symbolism.
Peer Review:
- Students will print poem from the poetry writing engine and break into pairs.
- In pairs students
will begin a peer editing session. Please follow the
peer editing checklist.
- With a partner students will review the use of imagery in
their poem. Please follow this
handout for questions.
Symbolic Poetry:
- In order to generate ideas, students will use the
Instant Poetry Muse. Once
students have generated an idea, relate the created line to something
symbolic.
- Remember, symbols can be:

words
-
actions
-
settings
-
characters
-
situations
- Use magnetic poetry kit
to experiment with different ideas for poems. The poem should contain
a symbolic reference. It can be one line, one word or the whole poem. (Remember
a symbolic poem should symbolize something to your readers.)
- Work on your poem in class, using either Magnetic Poetry
or paper and pen.
- Students should generate two poems by the end of class.
Remember: poems are like stories, they are best when they are revised!
Assignment:
- Students will revise both poems for homework.
- Poems will be saved for individual's creative writing
portfolio- which will be graded at the end of each quarter.
