The use of symbols in works of art. Symbol has a meaning in itself but is also understood to represent something else. Symbols can be:

Why do you feel the above pictures symbolized what? Knowing the definition, would you change your answers?
Poems with symbolism:
Read poems individually. After reading search online for pictures that best symbolize aspects of the poem. (They cannot use snow or geese.)
Individuals will present pictures in front of the class and explain why they were chosen.
Questions for discussion:
As a symbol, what does snow signify? How can it be seen as a link between the past and present?
What is symbolized by "the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain?" What do wild geese symbolize?
Students will complete symbolism worksheet on a separate sheet of paper. Hand in to teacher at the end of the period.
Students will individually take Color Symbolism Quiz. This aids in learning the importance colors can convey/ symbolize in poetry. Students will be graded on participation in quiz.
Assignment:
Students will find song lyrics of their choice (nothing vulgar). They will bring in the lyrics or the actual music recording and be ready to discuss the symbolism in the song at our next meeting.
