ASSIGNMENT 4
READING: Same as Assignment 3
WRITING: MEMO TO EMPLOYEES
Your company has just decided to publish a newsletter, and you have been selected to work on the committee that is putting together the first issue. At the first meeting of the committee members, you learn the following:
-
The company used to have a newsletter, but it was discontinued years ago.
-
The newsletter will be 12 pages long and will have regular features such as a section featuring employees who have accomplished something, a section announcing marriages and births, and a section containing a calendar of upcoming events.
-
One section will also be devoted to suggestions made by the employees of the company. Suggestions can be on anything from the food in the cafeteria to major policies governing how the business is operated.
-
The newsletter will be assembled using the company's new computer system and will be published on recycled paper to keep the costs down.
-
There are seven other people on the committee appointed to write and publish the newsletter.
-
It will be published once each month and delivered to employees' mailboxes. The first edition is scheduled for early September, which gives you about two months to put it together.
-
The president of the company is very excited about this new venture since it will help boost employee morale, which has been awful since the company laid off thirty workers last year.
During the meeting, you are given the task of announcing to all of the employees the good news about the newsletter. What information will you include in your memo to the entire staff? Write a memo that announces the newsletter and that includes pertinent information from what you learned at the first meeting. You should be very careful to exclude anything of little interest or concern to your readers, but be equally sure to include whatever is pertinent or vital to your attempt to put together the newsletter. Remember that a short memo can be very effective as long as it contains correct information and the proper amount of information.
