ENGLISH 221: INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS WRITING
KING'S COLLEGE
WILKES-BARRE, PA 18711
READING: Chapters 9, 12 and 16
WRITING: THE FINAL PROJECT
Completing this project will require you to read three chapters in the text and write a three-page, single spaced memo.
To complete your memo, proceed in the following manner:
1. Choose a topic. You can select absolutely anything that interests you--something related to your employment, your hobbies, your family, your interests, your future and so forth. Perhaps you're planning to buy or build a home, or you're going on vacation to the Jersey Shore in a few weeks, or you're looking to relocate to a new town, or you're interested in mountain biking. Pick a topic you'd like to learn more about.
2. Visit three web sites devoted to your chosen topic. Use whatever search engines your are most familiar with. You can, of course, visit more than three sites to find three worth writing about. But for the purpose of the assignment, three will be enough. In fact, don't dismiss a site because it is poorly designed or sparse on information. You can comment on those characteristics in your evaluation.
3. Evaluate the three web sites. Use Kolin's chapter on web page design for ideas on how to evaluate the sites. Look at both substance and style. Is the site interesting, well-designed, readable? Does it offer useful and reliable information?
4. Send me a three-page memo containing details of your evaluations. Be sure to include the URL's of the sites you've visited.
