ASSIGNMENT 14

READING: Chapter 14

WRITING: INSTRUCTIONS

Writing clear instructions is very difficult, and becoming truly proficient at it requires a long time of study and practice. For our purposes (and to satisfy this assignment) you need only write a short set of instructions of the kind that might be found in a business setting. After you've read Chapter 14, decide on a simple topic and write a set of instructions that would amount to approximately one page of type. Look at the examples in the book (pages 525, 529, 530, 536, 539) to get some idea of topics that lend themselves to a short set of instructions. Don't try to write instructions for a complicated and lengthy process. If you need further suggestions, see page 541, but be careful: some of the topics that Kolin suggests (tying a shoe, for example) would not be very easy to explain in writing.
